Plastic products are all around us! We see them in toys, food packages, and a multitude of other things we use every day. Have you ever wondered how these things are made? An important component in plastic production is something referred to as "plastic masterbatches. These are little, solid balls, available in a wide variety of colors and shapes. They may seem small, but help do a big job of creating the plastic items we depend on.
Plastic granules are made of a special kind of plastic known as "polymer. “In order to make polymer, small workers, or molecules, are connected together in a long chain. These chain-like structures make the polymer incredibly strong and flexible, enabling the creation of many different products that we use, from containers to toys. These properties are why plastic is widely used for many products.
Factories use a process called “injection molding” to transform these small balls into useful things. “ During this process, the ldpe plastic are heated until they melt. Next, they force the melted plastic into a special shape called a mold, which is the shape that they want the item to be. Once the plastic cools, it solidifies and takes the form of the mold. So with a few steps those tiny plastic granules can turn into really useful products!
After they’re made, the plastic granules are shipped off to various factories, where they’re molded into all sorts of things. Granules are mixed with other materials, such as colors and special additives, depending on what they are going to be used for. These additive mixtures can provide various properties to the plastic, including making it stronger or changing the color.
For this reason, plastic granules are crucial to the manufacture of many of the things we use, yet they can be an environmental hazard if we aren't careful. When we dispose of plastic products, they can take hundreds of years to decompose. That means they can seep into our oceans and harm marine animals, and will even contaminate our food sources.
And one way we can help fix this is by recycling plastic. Instead of disposing plastic, we can melt it down and convert it to the plastic granules again. We can reuse the plastic and create new products thanks to it. In this way recycling helps to limit the demand for virgin plastic and is a step towards saving our planet. It also prevents waste from ending up in landfills, and helps keep our oceans cleaner.
Plastic granules are incredible help because they can perform multiple functional activities! Plastic granules can be manufactured to be super strong, bendable, or clear, depending on what type of polymer they create and with what it is blended. It is this versatility that makes plastic one of the most used materials used across so many products.
