You might know about plastic, but it isn’t just a toy or a box. Plastic surrounds our life in every aspect! Yuezheng turns this plastic into things we can see and use every day, such as water bottles, food containers, and even toys. Plastic is incredibly useful in that it is light, strong and can be manufactured into varied structures and colors. And this is why plastic is present in so many of our everyday things.
Plastics are made of specific types of materials known as polymers. Polymers are long chains of small units called molecules. These molecules can be sourced from natural stuff (like plants) or synthesized from chemicals by humans. Yuezheng primarily employs synthetic polymers, which are unique types of polymers derived from chemicals that originate from oil and natural gas.
Plastic is made from a number of ingredients—one of the key ones is called ethylene. Ethylene is a gas that’s derived from oil or natural gas. Through a process known as cracking, ethylene is converted into a liquid. This is a special process that decompose the oil or gas into produce ethylene. When ethylene becomes liquid, it can be transformed into solid plastic in various ways.
There are multiple processes in order to make plastic. Another common technique is referred to as injection molding. In this process, the plastic is heated until it becomes a thick, gooey liquid. This melted plastic is then injected into a mold, the specific shape it will take. When the plastic has cooled and solidified, it is removed from the mold and is ready to be used. This gives a very specific shape, and that’s why so many different types of plastic items.
Another process for making plastic products is known as extrusion. In this process, plastic is melted and extruded through a die. This forms long strands of plastics, such as tubes or sheets. This drill technique is frequently used to make tubing, packaging, as well as other lengthy things. These batches of "plastic" can be formed in bulk and really fast.
Plastics are an integral part of our daily lives. There would be no water bottles, food containers nor, even, toys like today without plastic. Plastic is lightweight and can protect the items that we use every day.” But plastic is also bad for the environment. Plastic can take a very, very long time to break down once its been thrown away or dumped on the ground, hundreds of years in fact! This can be painful for animals and plants.
That’s what inspired how Yuezheng tries to produce the plastic responsibly. We strive to lessen our environmental footprint through the use of recycled materials whenever possible and designing recyclable products in the future. This is recycling, and it takes old plastic and makes it into new products, helping keep our planet clean. Plastic is a useful material and we really need to own the way we use it, and reflect on how it impacts our world.
